  • 04-03-09  Coffee Grounds 101

Coffee grounds can be used as mulch, a fertilizer, bug deterrent and as an addition to the compost pile. Coffee grounds add valuable nitrogen to soil and compost. Coffee grounds also contain trace amounts of potassium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium. Over time, coffee grounds can even lower the pH in soil! All that and it's free!
*Here are just a few ways to use coffee grounds.*

*1*.Add coffee grounds, coffee filter included, to the compost bin or compost pile. Microbes responsible for composting will get rid of the acid and neutralize the acidity in coffee grounds. Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen and raise it in compost. Use coffee grounds as a green material when composting. Coffee grounds also help compost retain moisture.

*2* Sprinkle coffee grounds around the garden before watering or before it rains. The coffee grounds will then act as a slow release nitrogen source. Sprinkle coffee grounds around plants to deter pests. Slugs and snails don't like the gritty feel of coffee grounds or the caffienne! The smell of the coffee grounds also confuses the sense of smell in some pests, masking the smell of their real target. Mixing coffee grounds into the soil deters root maggots.

*3* Mix coffee grounds directly into the soil as a soil ammendment and to attract worms. Worms love coffe grounds. Mix coffee grounds into the soil around acid loving plants like tomatoes. Mix coffee grounds into the soil around roses for bigger and brighter blooms.

*4* Soak 1/2 pounds of coffee grounds in 5 gallons of water for a quick fertilizer. Coffee ground tea is a good foliar fertilizer.

*5* Coffee grounds will work as a mulch. The dark color also attracts the sun and warms the soil. When using as a mulch, be sure to watch to see that it hasn't formed a hard crust.

*Would you like coffee grounds? We have plenty! Bring a bucket or buckets and we'll fill them up!

  • Our name has changed!   We hope the name change has not been too confusing. We are still the same place you have been getting your fair trade coffee and gifts from for the last year.   A little history on the name-- Tuvalu is a Polynesian island in the South Pacific. The worlds smallest economy with a population of about 9,000. It was where Wes and I always said we wanted to run away to someday!!  An online description we found said of Tuvalu--"this unspoiled corner of the Pacific offers a peaceful, and non-commercialized environment that is ideal for rest and relaxation. In Tuvalu you will discover a distinctive culture of people who vigorously maintain their unique social organization, art, crafts, architecture, music, dance and legends."

  • We will now serve beer and wine.  Please stop in to see our selection!

  • NEED COMPOST FOR YOUR GARDEN?
If you need compost, we can help you out! We save our coffee grounds to be used as both chicken feed and compost by local farms.
Looking for organic fertilizer/compost for your garden? Look no further! Stop in with your own container and fill up!
