Featured Local Artist

Tuvalu’s featured local artist is Jeff Martin

JeffJeff is a Michigan native and graduate of Michigan State University. He worked 14 years for the USDA Forest Service before joining University of Wisconsin-Madison’s faculty in 1983. When he retired from the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, UW-Madison in 1999, his life-long interest in photography became a main focus. After a 30-year career in forestry he still loves to wander through our woodlands…trying to capture those illusive forest moods. His company, JMAR Foto-Werks, was started in 1992 as a part-time business offering photo-art prints, note cards, stock photos submitted to magazines and calendars, commercial photography and some portrait work.

LeavesAcer saccharum (sugar maple, hard maple or sometimes sugar tree) is the state tree of Wisconsin (as well as NY, VT &WV) and is found on the flag of Canada. Common in our northern forests, the species is often tapped for maple syrup as well as used for many wood products (such as gym floors and furniture.) The leaves range widely in their fall colors … from bright yellow through orange to
fluorescent red-orange.

Sunrise comes to Owen ParkSunbeams through the hardwoods in Owen Park, Madison, Wisconsin Making an image of these sunbeams through the hardwoods was true serendipity! I’d parked along the street because the gate to Owen Park in Madison, Wisconsin was still locked at this early hour. After walking about for a while I figured I’d best be getting back to my truck before a ticket found its way to my windshield. Hurrying back I was delighted to see the beautiful rays of warm light filtering through the trees. I stopped long enough to make a few images and was doubly rewarded when I discovered the truck had apparently gone unnoticed. The gorge in Parfrey's GlenThe deep gorge in Parfrey’s Glen is a spectacular sight that greets the visitor to this spot in Wisconsin’s Baraboo Hills. Parfrey’s Glen Creek is usually a small clear cold-water stream as it tumbles over rocks in the gorge. In 2008, however, following record June rainfall, the creek became a raging torrent that rearranged much of the streambed as it roared through the gorge and beyond. The cool shaded glen is a great place to contemplate nature’s power to create and modify our landscape.

Both he and his wife have been residents of Middleton since 1983. Jan, former Executive Director with Middleton’s Chamber of Commerce, is also active in JMAR Foto-Werks. She is an avid gardener and talented photographer … and she designs and produces the JMAR line of photo note cards.Greating Card
